Mock-up and Prototyping

Mock-up & Prototyping, as we understand is very important aspect in new product development. We use simple and fast prototyping methods to demonstrate products at different stages of product development. These prototypes help us to make better design decisions and refine our designs from user, function, manufacturability and cost point of view.

Our Engineers along with suppliers and sub-contractors build prototypes at various stages with different mediums such as Rapid prototyping, CNC Rapid Models and Multiples, Functional Prototypes and Appearance Mock-up Models with HD foam, plastics, Sheet metal, MDF, FRP, steel etc. Their feedback during prototype building plays an important role in refinement of the design. We work in close liaison with various vendors for rapid-prototyping and vacuum casting of plastic parts.

We follow these stages of Prototyping :

Concept Models:
Fabricated from simple available materials. Used to communicate the concept such as needed for concept selection. It may only focus on a subset of features of the design.

Industrial Design Prototypes:
Demonstrates the "look and feel" of the product. Used for customer feedback. Great emphasis is made on the surface finish, color and texture and made as close to reality.

Developmental Prototypes:
Used for proof of concept and developmental testing. Testing is performed on the prototype to further develop the design, gather data to optimize the design, determine reliability and satisfactory operation under specified operating conditions.

Alpha Prototype:
Mostly full features, but may have some scaling. Used for internal testing and evaluation. In physical prototypes it uses same material & properties (e.g., design-intent parts), but different manufacturing processes (e.g., rapid prototyping, soft-tooled parts, etc.).

Beta Prototype:
Full features and scale, for comprehensive internal and external evaluation and testing. Beta prototypes use mostly final production processes.

Pre-production Prototype:
Full pilot production, in small volumes. Used to finalize manufacturing processes, assembly assessment and production tooling. May be used for limited release to lead customers. This is carried out in our own precision manufacturing firm Geneva Finepunch Enclosure Ltd.
